Reading time: Approximately 2 minutes.
For the last dozen or so years, I have facilitated a book club called Dickens Chicks. As you might guess from the name, we got our start reading only classic literature, like Charles Dickens. Today, we weave modern titles into our reading lists but still lean heavily on the classics. In January, for example, we read Whose Names are Unknown by Sanora Babb. We had planned to follow that in February with a reread of John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath. Both books are based on the Dust Bowl days, and both are fearless at showing the suffering caused by economic and climate disasters and the injustices faced by migrants forced to flee their homes and work for pennies to survive.
If this sounds similar to struggles we face today on a global scale, then perhaps it is no surprise that many in our group had had enough of the Dust Bowl by mid-January. Two Dust Bowl books back-to-back was just too much. So, as a group, we decided to lighten things up with The Diary of a Nobody by George Grossmith instead of Grapes of Wrath.
This got me thinking. Maybe you need a midwinter break from heavier topics, too. Over the next few weeks, how about we rifle through the Petite Over 40 archives and get a little silly? If I get brave enough, I may even share some original footage of puppet play that I’ve never shared before. We’ll see.
LOL 40-UP!
This oldie comes all the way from the Before Times when, in 2019, Mel Kobayashi and I put together a Laugh-In style show for our fellow Over 40 funny fashionistas. The jokes are cringe-worthy, as is my acting, but I hope it brings a smile and brightens your day. Mel is, as always, stellar throughout the video, but she is especially good in her homage to comedic silent movies. She’s a genius.
One more thing—If you live in Seattle and have back, shoulder, or neck pain, check out the Posture Power series led by Kim Trimmer at InsideOut Yoga. Her series starts soon, and class size is limited. Click the image below to learn more and sign up!
The book link titles are affiliated with Amazon. All three books are available there. Please consider borrowing from your library, choosing a local bookstore to shop for new and used titles, or consider Libro.fm for audiobooks, which supports local stores.
I did laugh out loud. I feel as if I've been in those tight pants before. Thanks for sharing!
I don't remember that bit about menopause! hahahaha!
